How to read the Bitcoin history
Six points for reading the chart without taking more from it than it shows.

The time axis
From left to right, from the oldest point to the newest in the period you chose. Dates and times are in UTC, the same basis as the source data.

The quote currency
Euro and dollar are two series: BTC-EUR and BTC-USD, traded separately on Coinbase Exchange. Switching the currency loads the other series; nothing is converted at the day's exchange rate.

What each point represents
The close of an interval, that is, the last price traded in it: 5 minutes in the 24-hour range, 1 hour in 7 days and 1 month, and the UTC day from 3 months on. It is not an average and not a consolidated quote from several exchanges.

The effect of changing the period
Change, highest close and lowest close are recalculated for the period you chose. The same price can show as a rise in one period and a fall in another.

Linear and logarithmic scale
On the linear scale, equal distances on the vertical axis are the same difference in currency. On the logarithmic scale, they are the same percentage change, which helps compare periods with very different prices. The scale changes the drawing, not the prices or the metrics.

Why prices differ across sources
Each exchange forms its own price from its participants' orders. Another platform, or an index that combines several, can show a different value at the same moment.

How the metrics are calculated
Change = (last close ÷ first close − 1) × 100, using two points from the same series. Highest and lowest close consider every observation in the period, before any simplification of the drawing, and so they may not match the high and the low traded inside each interval.
Coverage and “maximum available”
The history starts at the first daily candle the source publishes for the pair. Bitcoin traded before that on other platforms, and those prices are not part of this series. When the requested period starts before coverage, the page states the dates that were actually used.
Gaps
An interval with no trades is not published by the source. The chart breaks the line there and the data table marks it; no price is filled in. In the first months of each pair volume was small and there are days with no trades.
Interval still forming
The last point may belong to an interval that is still open, such as the current UTC day. It is shown as “forming” and it changes until the interval ends.
Limits of comparison
The series describes prices from one exchange. It does not include fees, spread, taxes or foreign exchange and it does not represent a wallet's result. Figures from other sources may use a different close time, another exchange or an average.
Frequently asked questions
Does the chart show the whole history of Bitcoin?
No. It shows the history Coinbase Exchange publishes for each pair, from the first day that pair traded on that exchange. Earlier prices, from other platforms, are not in this series. On “Max” the page states the first and last dates available.
Why does the quote differ across platforms?
Each exchange forms its own price from its participants' orders, with different liquidity and close times. Indexes and aggregators also combine several sources with their own methods. That is why the same moment can show different values.
What changes between EUR and USD?
They are two markets, BTC-EUR and BTC-USD, each with its own history and its own start date on Coinbase Exchange. The page does not convert one currency into the other: when you switch the currency, the whole series is loaded again.
Is the data updated in real time?
No. The series is reread from the source every 1 to 15 minutes, depending on the period, and the page fetches the latest price every minute while it is open. The time of each reading appears next to the price.
Does the change shown represent my investment result?
No. It compares two prices from the same series over the period you chose. It does not consider when you bought, fees, spread, taxes or foreign exchange, and it is not a recommendation or an indication of a future result.
